A great, if sad, story that deserves to be widely read. What happened in Michigan must have happened in other states in which legislators don’t care about toxic waste and its toll on people. All Americans must resist The federal government’s current deregulation of the EPA and weakening its powers.

I have never understood why the governments (local, state and federal) do not go after the executives of these polluting industries, to recoup the moneys spent on remediation.

Take their assets, and throw them in jail!

Yup, I lived near what is now a superfund site in my youth. Played in a stream that flowed through the site. My Dad died of cancer at 67 (diagnosed at 64). Both of my maternal grandparents died from cancer. My Mom had 4 different cancers. With no history of Type 1 diabetes in the family, 4 of us siblings (out of 5) have diabetes, and thyroid disease. My youngest brother had a large tumor removed from his kidney.

We drank well water, swam in a polluted pond (and lake), played in polluted dust. And you wouldn’t have known it just looking at the beautiful country property we called home.

The polluters should pay for the harm they cause. It’s not like they are ignorant or naive… just uncaring and greedy.

This is an excellent article! And The New Lede is a very nice addition to get more information out about environmental pollution and problems. We’re read articles from EWG for years and definitely appreciate their research and follow their recommendations as closely as we can. We also donate as we can, but as retired teachers, now 80 and 79, with 4 married children and 8 grandchildren, we can’t do much to offset the huge cuts in environmental protection programs we are facing now. Plus, as everyone, we face the the constant demand and need for donations from organizations to the homeless on street corners.
Thank you for every article you write!
