WATCH: Fight over the nation’s premiere chemical safety law
There is a battle brewing over the future of how the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) evaluates chemicals for safety. Over the past decade, industry groups have called for changes to the Toxic Substances Control Act saying the chemical review process is slow and stifles innovation. Now these industry concerns have made it to Congress, with Republicans signaling a desire to revisit the law. Environmental and health groups have cautioned that stripping away aspects of chemical reviews will leave people and the environment at greater risk. Meanwhile, the EPA is already starting to chip away.
