Congress is proposing to strip away key safeguards aimed at protecting military personnel, firefighters and their families from exposure to toxic PFAS chemicals. The 2026 National Defense Authorization Act drafts propose lifting a moratorium on PFAS waste incineration, reversing bans on PFAS in products on military bases and allowing continued use of cancer-linked PFAS firefighting foams. Lawmakers also want to slash environmental cleanup funding for the Department of Defense by nearly $200 million — even as PFAS contamination and cleanup costs soar.
